How much does the way we dress influence our lives—shaping how others perceive us, how seriously they take us, and the image we project of ourselves? How much does it impact how we feel about ourselves?
Let’s take glasses. A recent survey conducted by the British College of Optometrists found that people assume those who wear glasses are more intelligent and dependable. Another study by Nature Communications revealed that needing to wear glasses is often associated with higher levels of intelligence.
So, basically, glasses equal "smarty pants" in the eyes of many. While I’d love for this not to be true, it tells me that books are indeed being judged by their covers.
So, could feeling more powerful—or at least looking like it—really take us places? I believe so. And that’s where power dressing comes into the mix for me. When I’m well-dressed, I’m more confident; when I’m more confident, I’m more successful. And dressing like I’m the boss actually does help me get things done.
