I do believe personal style is just developed when we know ourselves. When we understand who we are at the present moment from in > out. Fashion has more in common with personal development and spirituality than people know. Amazing post! I loved ❤️

I laughed at your comparison of timeless leather jackets because I was just looking at a circa 2010 jacket in my closet! I kept it on the chance that the style comes back around (as things often do) but right now it looks so silly to me.

I really enjoyed your tip on authenticity! I think there’s also something to be said about looking for neither fitted nor oversized pieces unless they really speak to you. I say that because the vacillation between oversized and fitted is so fast it’s easy to look outdated.

They will probably come back sooner or later, that’s why sometimes I hold on to clothes for too long and I end up with very a busy wardrobe 😂

And btw Kelly, that’s a very smart way to go around trends actually! Not going too extreme on the fit can really help indeed.

I loved reading about your point of view and had a laugh at the comparisons, they are spot on hahahha!! Discovering and sticking to your own style requires time and effort, going with trends is more convenient and kills the process of authenticity. Most people choose convenience.

I just wrote a substack about how algorithms and current trends kill our authenticity and personal style and im happy to read similar opinions :)

My thoughts exactly, I loved this article because it brings up something many editors fail to grasp when recommending products and that's writting for the general public instead recommending products based on personal styles.

I love my skinny jeans for instance and regardless of whether they're it or not at the moment, I wear them often, because they look good on me. Ok, fine maybe I pair them with some items like oversized jackets and chic footwear to make them look less outdated, but nevertheless my point is that they feel more like a basic piece to me than a trend.

Thanks for writting this. It's so refreshing <3

This is so so good, should be required reading for anyone looking to redo their wardrobe !! timeless basics are a great template, but there’s no guarantee the edition/variation available to you/that appeals to you at the time you get them will not be subject to the trends of the time, in fact it’s nearly guaranteed!! If you love that variation of a white t, get it! But you probably won’t know for a while whether it’s “of its time” because we’re IN that time ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ it doesn’t make them good or bad, just means you might feel the need to replace them at some point even though they’re a “classic.” Also why I prefer to not break the bank and try to go second hand even for the “investment pieces” bcs I feel like if I’m drawn to an out of day iteration, it’s true love lol 😂 sorry for essay comment, but I just really loved this piece, ty for sharing!!

I really enjoyed this piece - thank you! I also completely agree - not much is truly timeless.

I also need to look more to myself when getting dressed, trusting my gut instead of wondering if others will approve. I do think we all care what others think, to a certain extent, but I'm often feeling too much doubt. For example, I really do love my black pleated pants, something I never would have considered at one point, but I rarely wear them. They're wide and baggy and I'm not comfortable in a super slim-fitting top that probably should be tucked in!

I feel you Mary, I am guilty too of being a bit too self-conscious at times! We should not care that much about what others think but it is often hard not to. But there are so many ways you can style those pleated trousers in ways that make you feel more you :)

I love your ideas in this! Thank you so much for sharing! I think that personal style (also) is simply the expression of what you want to look like or - better saying - what you want to say in a certain phase of your life. When we would look back at pictures of an outfit we felt amazing in three years ago, we might very much get the same “no, that’s not it / me” now. To me, personal style is always aligning what you want to say with your clothes with what you are in fact saying with your outfit. And if you know yourself well, this will be a very strong expression over a long period of time.

Thank you for reading Anika 🤍 I like your take on personal style too! It made me think that even if in the years I probably wanted to say very different things with my style (or simply had no idea), I think now who I am and what I want to say very much align and reflect in my style choices. And that’s the fun of it isn’t it? Using style to say express…something!

Hit the nail on the head! Or closed the clasp on the eye?! I’ve been thinking a lot about personal style for me and have been left feeling uninspired lately. I also wonder how geographic location, even just within the U.S., influences personal style.

Thank you for reading Kate! I feel you, it gets hard sometimes but Substack has been such a great place to find some inspo for me. I think cultural factors play a big role in defining our personal style. I can definitely see my Italian background in how I dress for example 😂
